Switching over to The Boss, the Get Together Duos deftly handled Bruce Springsteen’s spare vocals and acoustic guitar strums on “The Ghost of Tom Joad” while warming up for the glowing notes from the synthesizers. I also liked the atmospherics and timbre of Larissa Devoda’s performance of Maurice Ravel’s solo piano words for the Centaur label, as well as the thrilling sweep of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony as conducted by Carlos Kleiber for Deutsche Grammophon. Where you may be a little disappointed is in these speakers’ sound quality. We definitely had higher expectations. It’s hard to say that they just sound bad. But, they have a very colored sound quality that has an outsized low-end (though not a lot of sub-bass extension as there’s no subwoofer). Frequencies sitting between the low and mid-range in particular are very pronounced, almost overwhelming the rest of the frequency range, to the point where we can hear a frequency somewhere in there resonating inside the speaker cabinets. Ultimately, you should invest in a turntable or record player that is the ideal choice for your needs. Some wireless speakers use Wi-Fi to connect, or other wireless protocols different than Bluetooth. DO YOU NEED WI-FI FOR A BLUETOOTH SPEAKER? Both speakers have a 1-inch tweeter and a 3.5-inch woofer, delivering 20 watts total. They're compatible with Bluetooth 5.0 and support the SBC Bluetooth codec, but not AAC or AptX. Despite the potential headaches dual speakers present in terms of pairing, we had no issue pairing with an iPhone 8 on our first try. The rest of the mid-range is similarly a little too full sounding while the high-end is barely there. We don’t find the high-end to sound veiled or muffled but it is a bit weak. In essence, the sound quality is somewhat muddy and seems to be the kind of frequency range someone who wanted to listen to house music would design (though probably with more high-end). The most unique aspect of the Get Together Duo’s design is how the two speakers charge. The left speaker has an actual DC In for the included power cable and cannot be used portably, while the right speaker only has a USB-C charging port—a USB-C-to-USB-A cable is included, along with a power adapter it can plug into. It’s strange to see two otherwise identical speakers charge in different methods—it’s far more common, for instance, to have a power adapter for one of the speakers, and then have the second speaker fed power from the first via a cable. But since House of Marley markets the Get Together Duo as “true wireless” speakers, that’s not part of the design. It bears repeating, though, that only one of these speakers is battery powered and portable, while the other speaker must be plugged in at all times. Measuring 7.9 x 4.1 x 5.1 inches (HxWxD), the twin Get Together Duo speakers cut fine figures. With their natural bamboo housings (in keeping with its sustainability theme, House of Marley notes that bamboo is “one of the fastest growing plants in the world”) and “Rewind” fabric coverings (a mix of reclaimed and recycled cotton, hemp, and polyester), the Get Together Duos boast a stylish yet earthy look that matches its other Get Together speakers. It’s worth noting, however, that the dark fabric covering is a lint magnet. For example, you could connect (say) a turntable to the left speaker via their wired RCA or auxiliary connectors, and then wirelessly connect the left speaker to the right one via Bluetooth.
