This all depends on the size of the fish you're catching. For fish under 20lb, it is fairly easy for the majority of anglers to just lift the fish up via the eye/loop on the scales and get an accurate reading. However, after that weight, the lifting can become strenuous, especially if you can only use one or two fingers to lift the scales, which can lead to shaking, causing the weight to fluctuate. You can either buy scales that have weigh handles attached or use a tripod/weigh bar to help take the strain and allow you to read the weight accurately, especially important if you catch a large fish when fishing alone. These Digital Scales from Avid have been designed to make to job of accurately recording fish weight an easier task. Feature a super strong stainless steel frame incased in a reinforced over molded body, every effort has been made to ensure they withstand the stresses and strains required to weigh big fish. RANGE:Choose between pounds or kilos, and they weigh up to 88lb (0.1lb increments) or 40kg (10g increments). EASE OF USE:About as user-friendly as it gets. A simple On/Zero button (which you hold for 3 seconds to turn off) tares the scales and then you can either ‘Save’ or ‘Clear’. Hit the former and you can record up to 50 weights.

Feature a super-strong stainless steel frame encased in a reinforced over molded body, every effort has been made to ensure the Digital Scales withstand the stresses and strains required to weigh big fish. Bottom out: This is a term given when scales are overloaded and go past their maximum weigh point, for example, a 10kg weight placed on a set of 8kg scales. We really like the look of the built-in fold-out stainless steel arms that benefit from ergonomic reinforced sleeves, allowing you to get a firm and secure grip when lifting up the scales. EASE OF USE:Three buttons to carry out three processes: On/Off; Tare (to zero your sling); and ‘Unit’, which allows you to switch between pounds and kilos. Just like the Avid scales, very simple to operate. EASE OF USE:Toggling between pounds and kilos is easy—just one push of a button. Taring is equally as simple, with its own function button. The built-in fold out arms are also made from super strong stainless steel with ergonomic reinforced over molded sleeves.

EASE OF USE:Very easy. On/Off button in the middle of the scales and then you simply push the ‘Reset/Zero’ button once you’ve attached your sling. Switching between pounds and kilos is extremely easy too.It then really comes down to what your budget is and how brand loyal you are, as most of the scales carry the same features. The cheaper models don’t have the ‘Memory’ feature, so if that’s something that is important to you, then the Reubens, Kordas, and Wychwoods with their 100% accuracy reading could be a good choice. However, do remember that those first two models are the most expensive on test. Supplied in a neoprene protective case, it looks as though the Avid Digital Scales are designed to last and should certainly see you through plenty of bountiful sessions for many years to come. Weigh bar: A strong metal bar, that can be slid through the eye on a set of scales to help lift up big fish much more easily, by giving anglers something to hold onto more comfortably. The Wychwood Digital Fishing Scales feature a ‘T’ bar design to make lifting the fish a little easier, whilst making sure this is done as safely as possible, bringing very little harm, such as scale damage, to your catch.

OVERVIEW:Electric car: Tesla. Vacuum cleaner: Dyson. Fishing scales: Reuben. They are your go-to brand for reliability and heritage. In fact, these were the very model of scales that weighed Dean Fletcher’s 2016 British record—and were 100% bang on when they were tested at Weights and Measures. The built-in fold out arms are also made from super strong stainless steel with ergonomic reinforced over moulded sleeves. Weigh hook: A metal eye or loop attached to the top of a set of scales to allow items like a weigh bar or crook to be attached to help lift the fish.It is also important to buy a set of scales that are capable of weighing the fish you are looking to catch. If you're an avid roach angler, then a set of scales that weigh up to 10lb would be a great choice. They provide the finesse for accurate weighing of smaller fish and if you bottom them out with a roach, you wouldn't care anyway. If you like to fish for large fish like carp or catfish, a set of scales that can weigh in excess of 100lb are required, just make sure the scales you choose are suitable for the fish you're targeting. Glossary Tripod: A device used to help weigh fish. Usually metal, it is a 3-legged design and fused at the top with a hook attached. The scales are placed on the hook and the tripod takes the weight, allowing hands-free weighing of the fish. OVERVIEW:A lot of scale for a very competitive price tag. They come supplied with a neoprene pouch and a foldaway weighing hook so they are compact. The soft-touch buttons are simple and clear to operate. Along with a ‘zero’ function, you can also read the air temperature in fahrenheit or celsius! EASE OF USE:Operating—like all of the models featured—is done from three push buttons. ‘On/Off’ is enabled by pushing the ‘Power’ button for 2 (On) or 3 (Off) seconds, and you zero the scales by pushing the same button. With a maximum weighing capacity of 60lb, these are sufficient for your local lake, but not so much if you fish over in Europe regularly.

EASE OF USE:These scales follow exactly the same layout as the Prologics. The only issue we had with these was the taring, which happened just once: it kept starting at 0.20kg. And then it did go to zero for seemingly no reason! Increments: These are the increasing, numbered marks or lines on a dial scale that show the weight, whatever increment the needle rests on is the registered weight. The Digital Scales from Avid have been designed to make to job of accurately recording fish weight an easier task. The Avid Digital Scales from Avid have been designed to make to job of accurately recording fish weight an easier task. Scales come in all shapes and sizes, with some having the ability to weigh over 100lb and others being more delicate for a more accurate reading with smaller fish. There are two main types of scales you can opt for, either digital or dial scales. The dial scales have been around for decades and are widely used by anglers all over the world, however, the digital revolution has hit scales and many anglers are turning to 'digi scales' for a more accurate, easy to read option. The best fishing scales at a glance...Each of the scales was hung and zeroed on a Nash Weighing Tripod, and then tested three times to see if there was any variation in the results achieved. There’s no human element in this test—just pure scientific fact. Here’s how each of the scales got on… caption id="attachment_2825" align="aligncenter" width="300"] The compact space saving size is a great feature....[/caption] The main thing you should look for in a set of scales is reliability, choosing a brand that has an excellent reputation for producing accurate scales is by far the most important factor. There is little to no point weighing a fish if the weight the scales read are completely inaccurate, so getting a good set is paramount if you want to record your catches correctly. The Avid Carp Digital Scales have been designed to make weighing big fish an easier task. These heavy-duty fishing scales feature a super-strong stainless steel frame encased in a reinforced over-moulded body, and every effort has been made for this product not only to withstand the stresses of fishing but give accurate readings with ease! OVERVIEW:Similar in design to the Avid Digital Scales, with the fold-out arms and top hook, but not quite as compact and these don’t come supplied with a neoprene case. The power-saving feature that automatically turns off after 60 seconds of inactivity and battery life indicator are neat features.
