The slight edge that Fulfil has over the majority of protein bars is that it has 9 vitamins including Vitamin C (better immunity), Vitamin B1, B6 and B12 (more energy), calcium (stronger bones) and even folic acid (prevents anaemia). #2 Grenade Protein Bar Fulfil boasts 12 fun flavours, from salted caramel to mint chocolate – so there is something for everyone. They are vegetarian (no gelatine), but unfortunately, not vegan.

Firstly, I’d like to thank all brands for being here today. It’s been a pleasure taste-testing you all. But of course, there can only be one winner. Aldi is raising the bar with its protein cereal bar offering with the introduction of two delicious White Chocolate With Sweetener (32%) (Sweetener; Maltitol; Cocoa Butter, Whole Milk Powder, Emulsifier; Soy Lecithin; Natural Flavouring), Protein Blend (Calcium Caseinate (Milk), Whey Protein Isolate (Milk)), Humectant; Glycerol; Hydrolysed Beef Gelatine, Isomalto-oligosaccharide, Roasted Peanuts (7%), Water, Palm Fat, Peanut Paste (2,6%) (Peanut Kernels, Peanut Oil) , Flavouring, Salt, Sweetener; Sucralose

Standing in the aisles of Holland and Barrett, I stumbled across my first hurdle: which flavour do I choose? Surprisingly, Aldi protein bars share very similar ingredients to its more established competitor, Grenade. On par with Fulfil bars, it has 21.1g of protein, 219 calories and only 1.9g of sugar.

Protein Blend (Calcium Caseinate (Milk), Whey Protein (Milk), Milk Protein), Milk Chocolate with Sweetener (20%) (Sweetener; Maltitol; Cocoa Butter, Whole Milk Powder, Cocoa Mass, Emulsifier; Soy Lecithin; Natural Flavouring), Bovine Collagen Hydrolysate, Sweeteners; Maltitol, Sucralose; Humectant; Glycerol; Bulking Agent; Polydextrose; Chocolate Chips with Sweetener (5.8%) (Cocoa Mass, Sweetener; Maltitol; Emulsifier; Soy Lecithin; Fat-reduced Cocoa Powder, Natural Flavouring), Soy Protein, Soy Oil, Sunflower Oil, Flavourings, Potassium Chloride, Emulsifier; Soy Lecithin Grenade’s cookie dough protein bar is like biting into the real deal. It’s fudgy, not claggy and has that grainy, sugary aftermath. Nailed it. Yes, Carb Killa® have gone through the Informed Sport testing process and are widely consumed by professional athletes and military personnel.

Aside from taste, texture etc. we also need to test that these bars are doing their job: “high in protein”. We don’t want to be duped. Protein bars are fairly processed, but these have some natural ingredients including cocoa butter and whole milk powder. These bad boys have 20g of protein, less than 3g of sugar and only 198 calories. This will definitely help you hit your macros if you’re falling below your goal. Before we jump in, I asked my followers which protein bar they thought would taste the best. I wanted to know whether there would be a preempted opinion. Will Aldi taste cheap? Will Fulfil really fulfil? Grenade’s got 14 flavours to share, including Jaffa Cake and the classic PB&J. The downside? It’s not suitable for vegetarians or vegans because the ingredients contain beef gelatine. (Sigh.)

Milk Chocolate With Sweetener (25%)(Sweetener; Maltitol; Cocoa Butter, Whole Milk Powder, Cocoa Mass, Emulsifier; Soy Lecithin; Natural Flavouring), Protein Blend (Calcium Caseinate (Milk), Whey Protein Isolate(Milk)), Humectant; Glycerol; Hydrolysed Beef Gelatine, Chocolate Chips With Sweetener (8%) (Sweetener; Maltitol; Cocoa Mass, Emulsifier; Soy Lecithin, Low Fat Cocoa Powder, Natural Vanilla Flavouring), Bulking Agent; Polydextrose; Palm Fat, White Chocolate With Sweetener (Sweetener; Maltitol; Cocoa Butter, Whole Milk Powder, Emulsifier; Soy Lecithin; Natural Flavouring), Low Fat Cocoa Powder, Sea Salt, Flavouring, Sweetener; Sucralose Milk Protein (Calcium Caseinate (Milk), Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate (Milk)), Chocolate With Sweetener (20%) (Cocoa Mass Sweetener; Maltitol; Cocoa Butter, Milk Fat, Emulsifier; Soy Lecithin; Vanilla), Bulking Agent; Polydextrose; Gelatine Hydrolysate, Humectant; Glycerol; Soy Protein, Cocoa Butter, Soy Oil, Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Sweeteners; Xylitol, Sucralose; Tapioca Starch, Sugar, Flavourings, Salt, Emulsifier; Citric Acid Ester, Soy Lecithin; Colours; Titanium Dioxide, Copper Chlorophyll; Vegetable Oil; Shea Oil, Palm Oil; Natural Peppermint Flavour But what’s the true verdict?
