I didn't understand their motivations and actions, some of the "love stories" were just weird and misplaced, and the plot twists were just. Both books could easily be read as stand-alone novels, though I highly recommend you read Songs of Love and War first, purely because it is so good and will add to your enjoyment of Daughters of Castle Deverill. So many story lines weaving together, leaving the reader with great anticipation about what happens next. It’s the type of historical fiction I generally enjoy–the family is large and complicated; the story mostly focuses in one time period, but we do see flashes of the past. There's nothing better than sinking into a novel and empathising with the characters as they journey through the novel, experiencing both ups and downs.
