Perhaps I should have expected this, because Garmin makes it clear that the 22x does not have an altimeter while the 32x does. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Now you can know your surroundings — such as waterways, natural features as well as buildings, international boundaries and more. Cracking little unit, I did not want anything to complicated and this is exactly that, the maps are not Ordnance Survey but they are adequate for what we are using it for. From your local crag to the summit of Everest, at Tiso, you’ll find the climbing and mountaineering equipment you need.

But where I often bikepack and backpack, climbs and descents define the rhythm of the day and help me plan where I’m going to be when. Now you can know your surroundings - such as waterways, natural features as well as buildings, international boundaries and more. Maps available include cycling maps, street-level road maps, marine g3 BlueCharts and topographical maps. If you can afford the 22x/32x and just want a reliable GPS for the longer term, it's worth getting it. The Garmin eTrex 22x also features 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a microSD card slot for additonal Garmin eTrex 22x compatible maps. The hand lens includes a leather case and stands as an outstanding tool suitable for both students and professionals alike. The eTrex uses both GPS and GLONASS satellite systems so the receiver has the ability to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone and comes preloaded with road-routable TopoActive Europe maps that feature streets and trails so you can take the journey off the grid. The battery life of my iPhone doesn’t cut it when I need the GPS to keep running for days on end, so this little “hiking GPS” is perfect for my needs. Routes You can use the eTrex 32x to calculate routes on the fly, without any preplanning on the computer. The TOPO PRO means that it is the latest map card from Garmin, giving you off-road turn by turn routing within the National Parks, this means you can select a location many miles ahead and the GPS will route you via the footpaths to get to that location (like a car sat nav does).

If you want to save some money, get the older eTrex 20 or 30 model or eTrex 30x and load free maps on it. I find these topo maps easy to read and helpful for understanding the terrain around me, which is an important part of bikepacking in rugged areas. My review summary: The Garmin eTrex 22x is a durable and affordable navigation device for those who want navigation and topographic maps in the backcountry without using a smartphone app. The map is less detailed than OS maps but provides relevant useful information for activities like hiking and cycling, it's routable giving you turn by turn routing (on and off road) and shows elevation changes.eTrex 32x - green / eTrex 20 - dark blue / iPhone 11 Pro Max - yellow / Fenix 6 Pro Solar - light blue / GPSMAP 66i - purple In a section with some cliff walls and tree cover, the dark blue eTrex 20 and yellow iPhone are struggling with the eTrex 32x, and others are doing well. Additionally, this model features both LED and UV lighting options, making it an ideal tool for geologists and entomologists.
