Description

There’s the wedding-dressed woman with a little dog peeking out of her handbag; Milo imagines her in a grand cathedral ceremony.

On the train, Milo’s sister looks at her phone but Milo – excited but also anxious about seeing his mum - watches the people around him and imagines their lives, sketching his ideas in his book. In addition, this is a thoughtful and sensitive representation of what it’s like to visit a parent in prison, and is an important book to share with mid to upper end primary aged children to open up a conversation about what prison is and the role it plays in society and within many families. There is an another, imagined world, an absence between siblings and then the weight of the journey end. Leo: A Ghost Story, illustrated by Robinson and written by Mac Barnett (Chronicle, 2015), was named a 2015 New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book of the Year. Milo Imagines the World is a thought-provoking picture book on being open-minded, told in an accessible way for young children. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. A little girl ponders the everyday wonders she likes most – friends, pencils, staring out of windows – and the person who remains her favourite thing in the world.

Tip to parents: if you aren't prepared to talk to your child about jail and visiting family there, this may not suit your picture book needs. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated! The contrast between Milo’s crayon drawn imaginings, and thereafter his cluttered, pulsing train journey are skilled and telling.I also loved that the child was able to reflect on the assumption they made in their art thoughts and be open to alternative narratives because it’s important for kids to be flexible to changing their minds and knowing that sometimes we are not always right. There was just the right amount of choice to suit everyone without being overwhelming and I received comments from parents and staff about the quality of books offered compared to previous sales which have always been based around current crazes and well known celebrity authors. De la Peña’s descriptive language and Robinson’s innocent, endearing art make for another winning package . It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance.

Award winning team Matt De La Peña and Matt Robinson of Last Stop on Market Street have created an outstanding picture book recommended for readers of all ages. I think the most powerful image for me was Milo, looking at himself and wondering how people see him. Matt De La Peña’s creative story with its wit and glorious, descriptive text is intricately realised through Christian Robinson’s rich pictures. This also introduces the idea that people who are incarcerated have families that come and spend time with them.

The team behind the Newbery Medal winner and Caldecott Honor book Last Stop on Market Street and the award-winning New York Times bestseller Carmela Full of Wishes once again delivers a poignant and timely children’s book that’s sure to become an instant classic. I don't want to spoil the ending but it's a story about a boy named Milo and his sister who are riding the train, and on their ride, Milo draws pictures of the other passengers and makes up stories about who they are and where they're going. It’s a fantastic independent book seller that will actually be responsive and select appropriate books for you. De la Peña’s fifth book, The Living, was a Junior Library Guild Selection, a 2014 Best Fiction for Young Adults and a Pura Belpré Author Honor Book. I remember sitting on the crowded carriages, just like Milo, and imagining the lives of those around me.

There seem to be ‘ wedding dressed’ people and a ‘ dog peeking of a‘ handbag, alongside a ‘ whiskered man’ and a ‘ business man‘ with a ‘ blank, lonely face’. Christian Robinson is a 2016 Caldecott Honoree and also received a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for his art in Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña (Putnam, 2015); de la Peña himself took home the 2016 Newbery Medal, awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children for the "most distinguished book for children.

And then there's the boy in the suit with the bright white sneakers; Milo imagines him arriving home to a castle with a drawbridge and a butler. The NOT NEED AT ALL to give a moral lesson about his mother (in fact we don't know why she is there). Pictures brimming with activity, an endearing main character, and threads for thinking about art, families, and what we see in others make this a book that will hold up to many readings. Manages to be sophisticated while also bringing in the joy and wonder associated with picture books. This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally).
