About this deal

The Bethlehem hospital, nicknamed "the Beth" by locals, staff and residents, is a small geriatric hospital in the city of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, being threatened with closure due to funding cuts to the NHS. She is found dead the next morning, and the Beth is threatened with legal action by her daughter and son-in-law, who were due to inherit her home only three months later.

Perhaps the thought of a veteran Brit character-actor lineup in a care setting is a little mawkish, and I incidentally still have grim memories of Dustin Hoffman’s unsufferably patronising 2012 film Quartet with Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Michael Gambon. ALLELUJAH is a British drama following the staff and patients at a hospital for the elderly in Yorkshire. More genuinely bookish is the haughty former teacher Ambrose (he prefers the antique word “schoolmaster”) played by Derek Jacobi who broods over the Charles Causley poem Ten Types Of Hospital Visitor. The film was released on 17 March 2023 by Pathé in France and Switzerland and in the United Kingdom through Warner Bros.

Coraline, Stick Man, Chuck Steel: Night of the Trampires, The Boy in the Dress, Grandpa's Great Escape, Patrick, Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, Sumotherhood, Dawn French is a Huge Tw*t, Sing, Sing 2 and Death on the Nile are the popular movies of Jennifer Saunders. When news of the closure of a small hospital's geriatric ward begins to reach the community, the hospital invites a local news crew to document their planning of a concert in honor of the hospital's most celebrated nurse.

Allelujah, Richard Eyre’s bewildering new adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play about an at-risk elderly ward in Yorkshire, starts with the kindly Dr Valentine (Bally Gill) espousing how he’s “always loved the old”. But the new Covid section at the end, with its unexpected pivot to drama and crisis, works well enough. But pobody's nerfect, and Flicks Ltd nor any advertiser accepts liability for information that may be inaccurate.

Conservative management consultant Colin (Russell Tovey) is visiting the Beth to inspect it ahead of its impending closure, and it’s up to the staff, including the idealistic Dr Valentine (Bally Gill) and head nurse Sister Gilpin (Jennifer Saunders), to win him over and save the hospital. As is the way with reviewing new releases whose plots hang on a major revelation, we can’t really talk about Allelujah's hellacious Hail Mary of a finale here.

There might be a glimmer of hope with this task as the government consultant tasked with the final evaluation - "Colin" (Russell Tovey) has his estranged father " Joe" (David Bradley) in that self same facility. Bally Gill plays the genuinely caring Dr Valentine and Jennifer Saunders is the formidable, no-nonsense ward sister Gilpin who runs a tight ship.
