Description

Earwig and the Witch" is a sad book -- not just sad because it was Jones' final novel, but because it feels like she never really finished it. Gorō said that his father told him to go with it and Toshio Suzuki encouraged him, but after that he was left on his own and made the anime with young staff and "didn't consult with the old guys at all. This short novel is crammed full of great vocabulary, plenty of gaps in the meaning and enough for a reader to sleuth through whilst maintaining a tidy pace and highly memorable cast of characters.

Earwig has been at the orphanage for her entire life and she is perfectly content staying there forever.Using her own cleverness--with a lot of help from a talking cat--she decides to show the witch who's boss.

A young tween novel by World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Diana Wynne Jones, beautifully illustrated by Paul O. I could easily see myself several years ago (well, quite a bit more than several but let's not get into that! A magical story for young readers from the author of Howl's Moving Castle and Charmed Life, Diana Wynne Jones. As children, Diana and her two sisters were deprived of a good, steady supply of books by a father, ‘who could beat Scrooge in a meanness contest’. The humour is light, and the ending felt a little unresolved, but I still enjoyed this story, and really liked the illustrations, which were quirky and a little spidery. But sadly, "Earwig and the Witch" is not really up to Jones' usual brilliance -- it's a fun book, but it feels like an unfinished draft that ends abruptly, without dealing with all the plot threads. On October 13, 2021, it was announced that Netflix had acquired the worldwide streaming rights to the film, except Japan and United States. As a huge Studio Ghibli fan (you may remember my Ghibli watching project in 2010), I missed the magic that Hayao Miyazaki brings to a story.

You feel sorry for the little orphan, Earwig, at first, then as she begins to find her feet, you're behind her all the way, an enchanting read.It uses the exact dialog and pacing from DWJ's book and, in my opinion, it's not quite the right pacing for a film. Bella Yaga says she’ll train Earwig to be a witch, but in reality makes her prepare ingredients for spells, and clean. This was a pretty good middle grade fantasy novel and is soon to be an animated film from Studio Ghibli in the future. Then one day Earwig is chosen to live with a very strange couple: Bella Yaga, her new ‘mother’, is actually a horrible witch.

goro miyazaki, the son of the other guy, is in the process of making an animated film based on this story.NHKで放映、海外でも劇場公開され話題の『アーヤと魔女』が、4/29 (木•祝)に、全国の映画館で上映されることになりました。 一部追加カットを加え、映像と音響を劇場クオリティで制作したアーヤを、ぜひ映画館のスクリーンでご覧ください。 [At the end of last year, Earwig and the Witch, which was aired on NHK and released in theaters overseas, will be screened at movie theaters nationwide on Thursday, April 29. This will make it the first theatrical release of a Ghibli film since Princess Mononoke not to be distributed by StudioCanal UK in the region.
