He first talks about how men suffer from certain diseases at much higher rates than women, but then goes on to tell the reader about how women are the real victims, because of "socioeconomic and gender-based social inequalities. Which brings us around to the larger question here: What the fuck does any of this stuff have to do with microbiomes and literal bacteria? Sadly, in a trend that seems to be increasing over time, a book about literal bacteria has somehow managed to cram in a ton of partisan preaching, jargon and politicking. For girls aged fifteen to nineteen, self-harm is the second leading cause of death, globally, after pregnancy. It has been said that the bacteria that make up our microbiota outnumber our own cells by roughly a 10:1 ratio.

There are many irrelevant rants about climate change and other assorted leftist rhetoric liberally peppering this book. It is gifted to us by our mothers at birth, adapts with us as we age, influences our moods and appetites, determines how fast we run and even affects who we choose as a partner. This involves following two cohorts of children from birth and studying how their gut microbiome evolves as they grow up in varying circumstances. The great unknowns are the exact mechanisms by which the composition of the microbiome may (and I stress may) be a factor in these conditions, and the science is so young that there simply isn't the evidence to make any definitive claims; given the extreme number of confounders, it's very unlikely we ever will. Just like an evangelical Christian who never shuts up about Jesus, these people just can't help themselves.

it not only helps us digest and absorb our food and metabolise vitamins, minerals and medicines, but it also has a key role to play in our immune system.

We have to come together and reject farming practices and healthcare policies that ultimately lead to the destruction of our human microbiome. Despite the complexity of the subject matter, the book is extremely well-written and easy to understand. We compared these diets to those in Sub-Saharan Africa where rural communities have very high-fibre, plant-based diets. The book makes a compelling case for why this subject should be taught in schools, given its far-reaching implications for public health.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In the developing world, millions of women still don’t have access to basic health services and modern contraceptives. Information about gut health is decent but it leans too heavily about climate change, Covid and other political views of which i think are biased (in my opinion) and feel as though the book fits a certain narrative that I respectfully disagree with completely. Could our microbes be in conversation with our immune system – and explain why diseases related to it are increasingly common?

the book explains the role of micro-organisms in our bodies and the impact on our health of their imbalance in our system and the world around us. We can’t solve our problems through dietary changes alone: we’ve got to address some fundamental underlying challenges to our human and planetary microbiome. The intro mentions the human appendix; long thought by medical orthodoxy to be a superfluous organ in need of removal.

There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. Things that the average person (like the actually privileged author) living in a WEIRD country has little to no experience with. We are just now starting to understand the role our gut microbiome plays in defining our risk of chronic or non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis, allergies and cancer.I guess those of us who purchase such a book are very much aware of the statistics and back ground stories.
