It's still a long film that takes things nice and slow spending more time with world-building than having a ton of fun like a Star Wars outing. Following a notorious aborted attempt by Alejandro Jodorowsky in the 1970s, Frank Herbert’s bestselling sci-fi epic Dune finally made it to the big screen as the third film by emerging surrealist wunderkind David Lynch, featuring an all-star cast that includes several of Lynch’s regular collaborators. augmented (no music theory pun intended) by audio interviews with Toto members Steve Lukather and Steve Porcaro. EDIT: As above, the UK release boasts the exact same, spectacular, Dolby Atmos track as per Warner's European 4K rollout. Released in 1984 and directed by David Lynch, Dune offers a gorgeous, surreal, but controversial take on the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert.surround channels and various groups of people clearly and perfectly directional as they move about the scene. After Lynch’s beautiful but extremely flawed 1984 version, the only other successful adaptation has been the 2000 miniseries which itself had its own problems (bizarre triangle costumes notwithstanding).

The audio is superb, provides a real speaker workout and Zimmers score including space bag pipes really adds to it. Home Entertainment's Dune (2021) remained on top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its third week. However, for those that are watching Dune on a big projector or large OLED TV, the 4K image is better suited for viewing. The a/b negative was meticulously re-conformed to reference elements provided by Lionsgate Entertainment and Universal Pictures. The 4K presentation is superb: the various nuances of Greig Fraser‘s cinematography are brought out in the HDR (High Dynamic Range) presentation, while the added resolution brings out a plenty of detail in the sets and costumes.

Its astonishing production design and visual effects can now be appreciated anew in this spellbinding 4K restoration, accompanied by hours of comprehensive bonus features. A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. Again, everything dressed with synthesized sounds, drone like music, processed guitars, forgettable melodies, and vocals that have become boringly familiar. As is the case with WB’s 3-D releases, they can take an impressive post-conversion 3-D transfer but then diminish the experience by not including the Dolby Atmos track that is included with the standard Blu-ray and 4K discs. aspect ratio, but this does result in a more consistent look for Dune, which is admittedly less distracting. The difference between this disc edit and the 4K streamed version is immediately noticeable, with a pristine, crisp image, no shimmering, no artifacts in dark corners of the screen, and proper HDR. That's obviously not a complaint lobbed at its source material, just what was chosen to be shown on the screen.

And it's impossible to tell, until the sequel arrives, exactly what to make of this first instalment. It's arguably one of the most immersive, intense tracks of 2021 (not that it'll make a UK Top 10 list as for some inexplicable reason it's not hitting our shores until 2022). As the two families clash on Arrakis, Duke Atreides' son Paul (Kyle MacLachlan, in his screen debut) finds himself at the centre of an intergalactic war and an ancient prophecy that could change the galaxy forever. Warner's 4K release of Dune is about to hit UK shores, proving identical to the one they've already released in various European territories (including the Italian disc), delivering stunning native 4K DV video and thunderous Atmos sound, as well as a hefty selection of extras on the accompanying Blu-ray. Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. The CGI effects rarely feel out of place and generally look exceptional, while the slightly soft “filmic” look is maintained throughout. Similarly, Baron Harkonnen’s sadistic nephew Feyd-Rautha so famously played in 1984 by a high-out-of-his-gourd Sting isn’t a necessary character until the very end of the book so he doesn’t appear here. One of the things I really liked about this version is how focused it is on the central characters of this particular half of the story. Framing, editing, composition, then add on a haunting and brilliant soundtrack, and then, add on a compelling story of revenge, betrayal, destiny, and love. Some fans may be disappointed that the IMAX scenes aren’t presented in full screen 16:9 as with Christopher Nolan‘s films, or receive a similar treatment to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with the even taller 1.
