Romy is a top thief in New York City, trying to buy her freedom from the mafia boss she's indebted to. I also loved the massive variety of characters this book shows, and their struggles within the society they were born into. I loved watching the budding romance form between Romy and Zander, but it leaves us on a cliffhanger… is it going to stay that way?? This book shows some themes of slavery and death, so please be warned before reading. Corrin was my personal favourite character and I can’t wait to see what happens to her in the next book! This book takes place in the modern world before you reach a point where it shifts to a fantastical setting. And I love that. I always love seeing authors play with parallels universes and we get into that journey of how a character from the modern world would adjust to a world of dangerous magic and supernatural beings. i can’t even get into more without spoiling the journey for you — which is exhilarating in every way — but know that this installment had me on the edge of my seat, bringing together plot threads that have been delicately woven since the first book.

But I think for me, the unexpected shining star of this book, was the side characters. This series starts out from primarily Romy's POV. But in the subsequent books, you get more and more POVs added. And I've loved that choice. Gifted thief Romeria has flourished from her days as a street kid pilfering wallets to survive. Now she thrives, stealing jewels from the rich under the involuntary employ of New York City's most notorious crime boss. But when an enigmatic woman secures her services at swordpoint, Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom. Great worldbuilding, very well explained and it was easy to picture everything described. It's not the first book like this I read and I loved the transition between these two worlds, it was so well written. Zander, the princess's betrothed, hates her, but he needs her help, and that makes it even more interesting. And so the adventure begins. You mean, when I can see where I’m going? Or when I’m not in one of those ridiculous dresses?” I counter, blowing out the lantern and setting it on the ground inside before emerging behind him. The tunic and breeches I found in my closet are fitted but comfortable, the navy cloak perfect to hide beneath. “And let’s see how fast you are in twenty pounds of chiffon and tulle, and wobbly heels.”

It was obviously recommended to me by Koisty, who has become my official rec dealer, who always seems to know what I need to read and in which particular moment.I read most books in 1-2 days, maybe 3 days max if I’m busy. This took me a whole week because I struggled to get into it so much. is it summer 2024 yet??!? i’ll happily trade my pumpkin spice latte for the next book in this series.
