McDonagh talks about a rather nicely extended pre-production period he was "granted" courtesy of a certain pandemic, which allowed him to hobnob

Costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh discussed the pains she and her team took to make the wardrobe not feel like "a pastiche of the Aran Islands", which included using cloth that was entirely homespun and only using Irish wools, linens, and overdyed fabrics. For Pádraic's red jumper, Mhaoldomhnaigh envisioned what his sister Siobhán would have genuinely been motivated to make for him. "I can imagine Siobhán thinking, 'Oh my God, the winter's going to be very cold. I'm going to knit him a jumper,' then making the little collar as a kind of personal touch... there's a beautiful naiveté to the way he dresses, but it's very tender as well, that idea that she adds this little touch to it. I think it says so much about him and his relationship with Siobhán, and his relationship with where he lives and his Irishness," Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh explained. [32] Collin, Robbie (22 December 2022). Audio: How’s it sound? Supplements: What are the extras? The Bottom Line Plot: What’s it about? Writer and director Martin McDonagh is skilled enough not just in creating strong dialogue but stunning sights. The way he shoots this Irish island is immaculate, giving a grand sense of scale and wonder. McDonagh’s mastery of drama is also rather stellar. At one point in the narrative, Colm threatens to cut off his fingers if Pádraic doesn’t leave him alone. He’s not kidding either. How many fingers are cut off? Well, it’s best to watch and see how far this desperation for contentment will go before these two characters harm themselves for the sake of finding happiness that seems miles away.Friedman, Roger (29 January 2023). "Box Office: "Fabelmans", "Tar", "Women Talking", All Oscar Movies Up, "Whale" Beached, Billie Eilish Bonanza". Showbiz411 . Retrieved 29 January 2023. Even the members of the community have a relatable and absurd charm to how they present themselves. With Colm distancing himself, Pádraic’s only other friend seems to be Dominic (Barry Keoghan), a young man who can’t stop thinking about sex and how hot he finds Pádraic’s sister, leading him to ask some rather uncomfortable questions. The local pub owner has his quirks of trying to keep his head low, the local police officer is pompously eager for violence, the local priest is highly protective, and the local shopkeep is a gossip hound who can never stop poking her noses in other people’s business. It’s a familiar community with common quirks and harsh critiques on how the simple life isn’t so simple.

Low Frequency Extension: The subwoofers strikes quite well and effectively with good range in the score, slamming, fire roaring, animals clip clopping, punches connecting and more. However, as a story & a film, I could only ever be partially engaged with it. The script is full of the excellent acidic prose that McDonagh is known for, but the actual narrative is actually quite boring at times. Nothing much really happens & at times also really stretches credulity. For example, despite the larger than life theme & overall ridiculousness, not liking someone then hideously maiming yourself to prove a point just didn't work for me. And whilst there were some quite poignant & deep musings on life at times, again it just didn't really fit the film for me. Then we come to the ending, which is a bit of a damp squib. The film just, sort of, finishes & I was left wondering "OK... Was that it?"Brunner, Raven (22 December 2022). "Where Was 'The Banshees of Inisherin' Filmed? Top Filming Locations". Decider .
