Sarachan: The interviews presented in the film are riveting. What did you learn from speaking to the people featured in the film? Things have been upped in the durability stakes moving from an IP55 water-resistant rating to a IP67 rating. That means you’re getting something that’s equipped to be submerged in water up to one meter depth for 30 minutes. In reality, that rating is about doing a better job of fending off sweat and increasing its chances of surviving for a run in the rain and maybe dropping them in a puddle on the way as opposed to taking them for a swim. Bluetooth and water don’t mix anyway, so there’d be no reason to take them to the pool. Gibson, a 30-year-old resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, gave birth to her son, Khari, in September 2019 via c-section. For days afterwards, she complained of shortness of breath. She and her partner, Omari Maynard, repeatedly called doctors, who told her it was fine, just relax. What I love most about the interviews is that they bolster the foundational stories of the protagonists. The interviews with Shawnee, Omari and Bruce are key in understanding the medical negligence behind the deaths of Shamony and Amber. It was vital that those details were shared through their own voices. Visually, we framed them to have a royal aesthetic giving our lead characters the authority and reverence they deserve when telling their story. What has changed is what Shokz refers to as ‘PremiumPitch 2.0’. This time it’s using the transducers to channel those vibrations that are angled to sit better on the cheekbone, promising to deliver sound that possesses more bass, less vibration and less sound leakage.

Another mind-blowing fact I learned is that the “delivery” in “labor and delivery” comes from the biblical phrase “deliver us from evil,” as women need to be “delivered” from their own evil. Knowing where that language comes from is particularly piercing in our now post-Roe world. When Amber Rose Isaac passed away in April 2020, Omari reached out to Amber’s partner Bruce McIntrye, and we immediately started capturing Bruce’s story. Everything was an organic connection.

With the first generation of Shokz, those issues were very prominent. You didn’t get a lot of power, they vibrated at higher volumes and they leaked a fair bit too. On the OpenRun, progress has certainly been made in some areas, but not in all. You are obviously not going to get the kind of results you’d expect from an in ear or over-ear headphones, but there are some noticeable improvements with the very gentle upping of bass, improved detail and overall upgrade in audio quality. Sarachan: Are there resources you can recommend for viewers who want to participate in this conversation and help aid in this movement for a better maternal healthcare system? If we’re talking about sound quality, then the OpenRun don’t go leaps and bounds beyond they're predecessors, though they do show some subtle improvements, particularly in terms of clarity and bass. Isaac suffered a similar fate. Her partner Bruce McIntyre, who is feeding their child, opens the next scene. Footage of a fresh-faced Isaac making a tutorial video about potting plants follows, and then an interview in which McIntyre shares how her doctors in the Bronx failed to notice low platelet counts that should have classified her as a high-risk pregnancy. They induced her labor, performed a C-section and neglected her until it was too late. I would also say look to the doulas, midwives and anyone doing maternal health work in one's specific community. The issues of maternal health are national, but they are also very localized. Every community has a social justice warrior doing the work under the radar that needs some help. We just have to actively look for them.The film is really arguing for woman-centered care,” said Lewis Lee. “That women should be heard, they should be listened to, and it should be about women finding the support they need around them for their birthing process before, during and after birth.”
