Linda Pirie I was a child in primary school when this series was broadcast, but I don't remember watching it, or even hearing about it at the time... Things definitely go south from there for all concerned. Look away now to avoid the spoiler… Gor discovers his mother is a Gorilla called Mary, when he meets her she is less than impressed and actually kills him in a rage. Meanwhile Gor has made Nell pregnant and when she gives birth the baby has a distinctly simian look….

Christopher Marriott OK so it's been over a decade since this article was written but damn does it stand up haha. I JUST discovered "breakout kings" &, am only halfway thru episode 2, yet I'm saying "why the hell did... The Lodge is situated alongside the entrance gates and is understood to date from the mid-19th century. It comprises a hall, sitting room, kitchen, three bedrooms and a bathroom. As well as introducing Dance to non-theatregoers, the role transformed him into the quintessential British hero, although he denies that such a transformation took place. “I’ve never felt I arrived as a leading man. I’ve never fronted anything. No, wait, there was a series called First Born; I suppose I was the leading man in that.” (He played a scientist who creates a human-gorilla hybrid.) By the time Gordon has uncovered his true origins he has fallen for Gordon’s daughter Nell, at the same time he is desperate to uncover the facts of his true parentage.

Mark Carroll I'm glad you enjoyed it. I do often wonder about actors who seemed good in things, then I didn't notice them subsequently. First Born is a well remembered slice of science fiction that did veer off into melodrama in the final episode but was redeemed by the strong playing by the cast and excellent script from Ted Whitehead (adapting the novel Gorsaga by Maureen Duffy). The same production team would also go to adapt another Fay Weldon fantasy – The Cloning of Joanna May.
