Description

It’s easy to see why many sewers love this tape: it’s a lot easier to apply and less time-consuming than actually sewing on a hem. It can also be applied to many fabric types, so it’s very versatile. It does take a little practice to get it right, but once you learn how to use it correctly, you’ll be grateful you did. If using sew in interfacing remember you will be working with three layers (two fabric and one interfacing). Take care to make sure the layers don't move out of line whilst sewing. A good tip is to baste the interfacing to the facing etc first before stitching the three layers together (see image below). Just look at the stunning effects created with Horsehair braid on this designer gown by Hayley Paige. This feature will give you an idea about the durability of the fabric tape. It should also inform you of the type of fabric it’s compatible with.

Iron-on hemming tape – This is the most popular type of hemming tape. It has adhesive on both sides, which is activated through heat. When applied correctly it creates a smooth hem and binds it together neatly. The best and easiest way of applying it is to use a regular iron. It is available in different widths, colors, and lengths, to adapt to the needs of each hem, and can be found in most craft/sewing supplies stores. The most common widths are 3/8″, 1/2″, and 5/8″. For dark colored fabrics use tape in dark colors while for light fabrics transparent tape is the best solution.

Tapes

You might need hem tapes if you are looking to reduce the hassle of sewing. The length and width of the tape will also vary depending on the type. Machine Washable We really like the Dymo and Brother label makers below that you buy with specialised iron-on tape for all your labeling needs. Mistakes can be corrected, and the glue removed, but not quite completely. Although you can partially remove some of the glue, there will still be some residue left. This is why it’s super important to be as careful as possible.

In any situation you need to consider the fabric weight and use hemming tape that is recommended for that type of fabric. Is hemming tape permanent? The color and texture can determine if it would look like an eyesore or make your attire look appealing. Type of Fabric Tape Gorilla tapes are an excellent choice for holding fabric together. They often last permanently. You can use them for subtle DIY projects as well as repairing old and torn clothes. Final WordsFusible hem tape is not suitable for very elastic, waterproof, raised weave or rough fabrics, basically fabrics that can’t be ironed. If you are working with a fabric you want to avoid pressing a sew in interfacing is a good option. Sew in interfacing is also useful if you want minimal bulk in the seam allowance because you can easily trim away any excess. The edge without the thread is sewn onto the raw edge of your hemline and the edge with the thread is hand sewn later. A useful tip is to bind the edge of the braid with some scrap fabric or binding for a smooth finish. If you want a no-sew solution for hemming or joining two pieces of fabric, the pressure-pressed hemming tape is probably your best bet.
