However, ultimately, the characters weren’t well developed and I did not feel a connection to any of them and the mystery element was predictable. There were very little subtleties surrounding who we should like and who we shouldn’t which meant that there could be no big reveal on who the villain was.

Even though supernatural activity was hinted at in the book, it felt very... Scooby-Doo-esque, and quite clichéd, what with all the Ouija boards and strange prophetic dreams. I really have to ask the question of why the author felt it necessary to turn her story from the genre of mystery to the occult. Also, the rules and extents to Tommy's use of magic is just... never explained. Readers just have to accept that he's a wizard with immortality skills and he's been vibing across London for the last 150 years. No one's noticed this guy who just doesn't age and possibly living in the same manky house for who knows how long.Published: 27th December 2018 | Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Books| Source:Publisher via NetGalley We’ve all seen this idea done a million times but what matters is what is done with those archetypes to make them more complex, to make them more compelling. In the blurb they said this would be like Clue meets Riverdale... Sounds great right? Color me intrigued! I am a huge fan of horror, mystery and crime fiction. When I was an avid reader, before having little bear, they were my genre of choice.

She raced from her room. Down the hallway she went, past her baby sister’s nursery, and the bedroom where her parents slept, their limbs entwined like the branches of neighboring trees. Soon the family would wake, and she wouldn’t be able to scour the mailbox in secret. But if she was very quiet (avoiding this floorboard, and that creaky step), she could slip outside without anyone noticing. I hated how he was portrayed as bad. Very bad. Take the worst guy in the world, Parker was worse than that. He was almost a rapist, was obsessive and violent, jealous. A good villain often has some redeeming qualities that make it not so easy to hate him, you have to kind of understand his reasoning, and usually his cruel steak is subtle, and not so in your face. It has been described as Clue meets Riverdale, and although I haven’t read Clue, I do watch Riverdale and I can kind of see why that connection has been made. They realize they've been lured together by a revenge seeker who wants to unravel the truth about what actually happened that deadly night, one year ago. Last One to Die is suspenseful from the very beginning, because Niamh knows that she’s in danger. She just doesn’t know what/who the danger is. Trusting people is hard and so is making new friends again. And as the book goes on, the intensity increases and the stakes get higher. There’s a good mystery at the heart of This Lie Will Kill You and I was able to push my questions about the set-up to one side and watch with interest as the events that led up to the first death in the woods gradually became clear. The only question became how many deaths would follow…
