All the while, Crouch did his part in Voldemort's plan. Moody's life was spared due to Crouch needing his hair to create the Polyjuice Potion, and wanting to question Moody for his behaviour, patterns and such, so Crouch could successfully imitate him, all the while keeping Moody captive under the Imperius Curse. [15] Barty, like virtually everyone else in Wizarding Britain, feared Azkaban, and the knowledge of his impending lifetime conviction (as well as the six Dementors in the room at the time) caused him to lose his nerve. J.K. Rowling: Yes, because a Patronus is used against things that the Death Eaters generally generate, or fight alongside. They would not need Patronuses.” World Exclusive Interview with J K Rowling," South West News Service, 8 July 2000 - "Hogwarts just serves Britain and Ireland." He briefly appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a result of Priori Incantatem, when Harry's wand and Voldemort's meet, showing the most recent spells cast by each – in the case of Voldemort's wand, the most recent lives taken. He makes a final appearance at the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows through the use of the Resurrection Stone.

To this end, Crouch used Polyjuice Potion to take on Moody's form to replace him at Hogwarts, successfully fooling staff and pupils alike. He imitated many of Moody's normal habits, including regularly drinking Polyjuice Potion out of Moody's hip flask. Doing this allowed him to impersonate Moody for almost the whole year without raising suspicion. [15] In 1994, he agreed to Albus Dumbledore's request to become the new Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor at Hogwarts; [11] however, he was kidnapped just prior to taking up the position by Barty Crouch Jnr, who subsequently disguised himself as Moody as part of a plan to kidnap Harry Potter on the instructions of Lord Voldemort. [15] After learning that Voldemort was planning to kill Lily Potter to get to the young Harry, Snape turned secret agent for Dumbledore against Voldemort. Later served as a re-doubled agent in the second war. He was the Potions Master at Hogwarts, and his Patronus took the form of a doe, the same as Lily Potter's, the only one whom he had ever loved. Snape delivered the Sword of Godric Gryffindor to Harry in the Forest of Dean using his Patronus. Killed by Voldemort's snake Nagini during the Battle of Hogwarts.

Barty's appearance in the film differs drastically from his looks in the book. In the book, he has straw blond hair and is more lined but in the film, he has brown hair. Nymphadora Tonks is a Metamorphmagus and an Auror. Her name means "Gift of the Nymphs". She despises her first name and prefers to be called by her surname alone. She is still referred to as "Tonks" by her peers even after her marriage.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire [ ] Discovered in chapter 11, Aboard the Hogwarts Express [ ] " A Hundred Horseless Carriages" [1] “ He was able to perform powerful magic with this wand, such as being able to cast the Disillusionment Charm, [1] nonverbal magic, [2] as well as defeating many Dark wizards during his career as an Auror, [3] personally killing Evan Rosier. [4] Bartemius Crouch Junior was able to cast all three Unforgivable Curses with this wand while impersonating Moody via Polyjuice Potion during the 1994–1995 school year at Hogwarts. [5] When I imagine both a recumbent broom and a regular broom, I continue to think of the regular-style broom as more efficient, easier to turn and handle in a split second, and more geared toward flying in a high-stress combat situation (holding onto the broom handle with one hand and pointing one's wand forward to cast spells with the other). Barty was insistent on his innocence, claiming he had not taken part in the crimes, and begged his father before the entire assembled Council and witnesses such as Rita Skeeter and his mother to clear him of the charges. Barty's father headed the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the time and was under extreme pressure to appear to be punishing the terrorism perpetrated by Lord Voldemort's Death Eaters. He also generally wanted to punish his son; he was very disappointed with him and it was a big embarrassment for Crouch Snr himself to have a Death Eater for a son. The torture of the Longbottoms was considered one of the most evil crimes recorded and used the trial as nothing more as to condemn his son.He was also friendly with Hermione Granger. Hermione and Moody fought at several battles together, but, when Moody was killed, Hermione was devastated. His popularity, however, was not universal, as a mutual hatred sprang up between him and Snape. Snape constantly tells Harry that James was "exceedingly arrogant", [13] and on one occasion, Sirius admits that he and James could sometimes be "arrogant little berks" but that "James grew out of it" (which Lily is said to have noted by their seventh year). He became Head Boy in his seventh year along with Lily as Head Girl. [14] Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 30 ( The Pensieve) - "a boy in his late teens, who looked nothing short of petrified." This was at his trial after 31 October 1981, so he was still younger when he joined.

Barty was extremely devoted to Voldemort and regarded him as a father figure. His loyalty was matched only by fellow Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange. He also seemed to know much of Voldemort's father, comparing him with his own father. This may imply that Barty was aware of Voldemort's status of being half-blood, but did not care, in contradiction to the Death Eaters' belief of pure-blood supremacy, or that Voldemort simply superseded the blood status. However, Barty's immense loyalty to Voldemort blinded him to those who truly loved him, namely his mother and the family's devoted house-elf Winky. They sacrificed much to give him a second chance at a happy life, which Barty tragically wasted in his obsession to reunite with Voldemort. As with many other Death Eaters, Barty had deluded himself into believing that he alone understood Voldemort, and that they were closest to each other due to their commons, to which was in fact not true as Voldemort never desired a friend nor understood human affections. Crouch Jnr's father, as a high-ranking Ministry official, spent his entire life dedicated to eradicating the Dark forces, and as such, didn't pay enough attention to his own son. When Crouch Jnr was caught with other Death Eaters at the crime scene of torture of Alice and Frank Longbottom to insanity, his father's parental affection extended to as much as giving him a trial, something he did not always give other suspects. In the end, the trial was merely to make an example out of his own son, and to publicly disown him, making clear he had nothing to do with anyone who would even remotely be connected to the committing of such a horrible crime. Crouch Snr mercilessly sentenced his own son to Azkaban for life. A new version of the wand was released by the Noble Collection. It is larger than the original that was available in an Ollivander's box and it has two rings with a metallic look. This altered look likely reflects a change in the wand's design that occurred after the production of Goblet of Fire, as the original prop of the wand displayed at the Warner Bros studio tour in London resembles a shorter version of the second wand produced by the noble collection, but with a swirled handle and a rougher, bumped design on the round end. The 'Ollivanders box' version of the wand is accurate to its appearance in The Goblet of Fire, and the version in the collector's box is most likely a relatively inaccurate attempt at replicating the second version of the wand, with aspects of the design lifted from the first. However, this is unconfirmed, as no wand belonging to Moody was ever seen on the screen other than in The Goblet of Fire. [8] Teaching skills: While Moody never had the chance to teach Defence Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts, [6] since Bartemius Crouch Junior did his best to convincingly imitate Moody's behaviour and habits, it can be deduced that Moody would have been a very effective professor, since Harry Potter learned from the fake Moody to resist the Imperius Curse, Dean Thomas noted that the fake Moody had taught them a great deal, and Dumbledore was not suspicious of Crouch's success in teaching the students. Moreover, Moody mentored his protégée Nymphadora Tonks in becoming a highly skilful Auror in her own right, showing him to have been an excellent teacher himself. [6] Moody enters the classroom for the fourth-year Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson. He tells the students they can put away their books, as they won't be needing them. Moody tells the class that they are very behind on dealing with curses, and says that he will be bringing them up to scratch on what harm wizards can do to each other. He tells the class that he has one year to teach them how to deal with Dark magic as he intends to return to his retirement at the end of the year.

Commentary

Crouch also loved Quidditch in his youth, a fact mentioned by Winky. Also, as a young man, he was extremely emotional, weeping and screaming before he was sent to the Dementors and pleading violently with his father to grant him leniency. He screamed constantly in Azkaban — but this can be supremely expected among the prisoners of Dementors. This could be seen as hypocritical, as he snarled at Death Eaters for hiding and refusing to brave Azkaban in Voldemort's name, which is what he did himself. However it could have been merely an act in an attempt to escape so he could continue his search for Voldemort, as he was shown to be a talented actor. Working hard and using all of his cunning, Crouch, as Moody, ensured that Harry Potter would get into the Triwizard Tournament and ascend to the Third Task. Upon doing so, Voldemort used Harry Potter to return to life in a body of his own with all its powers once again. When Crouch learned of this upon Harry's return, he tried to murder him, but Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, and Severus Snape stopped him. Barty Crouch Jnr may have won this wand's allegiance when he overpowered, defeated and kidnapped Moody before the start of Harry's fourth year. It is most likely he did, considering he was able to cast many difficult spells without any apparent problems. Furthermore, it is unknown how it worked for Alastor Moody after he was freed, as it is never stated how a wand that has been won behaves towards its original master afterwards.
