I’ve noted the exposure settings in my captions, but basically, I stayed on Manual mode, ISO 250 and f/5.6, slightly varying the shutter speed based on the ambient light. (As flash users would know, the shutter speed only affects the ambient exposure, not the flash exposure which is typically much shorter than the shutter speed.) Flash power was set to 1/64. The only exception is the two “shutter-drag” photos, whose settings are also noted in the captions. ISO 250, f/5.6, 1/50 sec. Flash power: 1/64. Look and feel The Lux Senior has manually adjustable power settings, from full power down to 1/64 in one-stop increments (Full, 1/2, 1/4 … 1/64). The photos in this article were shot at 1/64 power, except the “shutter drag” photos (see below) which were at 1/4. So I was clearly using only a fraction of the light output which this unit is capable of. And if I wanted more light, I could have also used a higher ISO or wider aperture (I was shooting at a modest ISO 100-250 and f/5.6-13). For example, take Godox’s range of hot shoe speedlights, such as the V860 III. With this flash, a letter after the model denotes which system it’s compatible with: F for Fuji, C for Canon, N for Nikon, S for Sony, and O for Olympus and Panasonic. Each brand has different pins and software that communicate with the cameras and operate in TTL mode.

The automatic mode intrigued me: remember that this is not a TTL flash. As it turns out, there is a tiny light sensor on the front of the flash that changes the flash output depending on ambient light. You can test this by firing the test button, then covering the light sensor and firing the test button again. As you can see in my video, you’ll notice the difference. Along those vintage lines, the strobe uses a simple dial interface that correlates ISO with aperture, power level, and shooting distance. Like other Godox products, the Lux Junior is attractively branded and presented. I used the Lux Junior as a trigger at its minimum power of 1/64, and it worked flawlessly. Olympus PEN-F . Olympus M.Zuiko 25mmF1.8 . f/2.8 . 1/125″ . ISO 320 Olympus PEN-F . The user guide lists some default values for ISO, aperture, and distance, though I just winged it. Auto mode is not terribly sophisticated, but at the same time, it worked fairly well in my test shots. It looks cool, and the handling and feel are excellent. The flash, as I mentioned, can be used off-camera – both with a sync cord as well as wirelessly, in optical control mode. But even when used on-camera – as with all the photos in this article – it produces a relatively soft and pleasing look, thanks to the way the reflector shapes the light. While it would be nice to have TTL and high-speed sync, it’s important to note that this is a budget, retro-designed flash. Its simplicity is a selling point, and a way to keep costs down.Placed in Manual, it turns on, and in seconds, a small light changes from red to green, indicating that it is ready to use. We control its intensity through a dial, along 7 steps between 1/1 (full power) and 1/64 (minimum). Finally, the other negative aspect that I have to point out is the fact that, when mounted on the PEN-F, I easily hit my forehead on the flash, and I can’t properly put my eye to the EVF’s eyecup, as they are close and at the same level. Okay let’s get this out of the way: the Lux Senior looks cool. It clearly draws inspiration from the flash bulbs of yesteryear, but those bulbs had many downsides, foremost among which is that they were single-use. They also took a while to reach full power, and were too hot to handle for a while after they went off.
