I'm not sure if Danielle Steel has always written this terribly, if she's phoning it in as she gets older, or if someone is ghostwriting terribly for her. The premise of this book sounds fun: a long-lost princess is reunited with her royal family. However, the writing is hardly better than a student essay with redundant passages that only serve to add to the word count. I have admittedly read very little of Steel's work, but I have to believe it used to be well-written for her to establish such an avid fan base. Firstly and very misleadingly, it’s written about a fictionalised royal family and not based on actual historic figures - which is not said anywhere in the books description. It was only in the first chapter when I couldn’t match up the names of the royal family with the time period that I realised it was all made up characters. I wouldn’t have bought it if I had known that. However, I decided to give it a chance, but it just got worse and worse from there. During the Kokutei Festival at school, Kyoko sees Kiki breaking up couples for being immoral and teases her by saying that she is jealous because she's single. Kyoko then reveals that she brought Culverin Bear along, causing Kiki to angrily vow to wipe out every single couple in the school. [4] Since cosplay was allowed, the couple didn't look out of place. However, Kyoko gets separated from Culverin Bear when she grabs a bear cosplayer instead, but they eventually find each other.
