Dictionaries & language learning Col 1 Dictionaries Paul Noble Easy learning languages Free dictionary resources In a nutshell: four-legged comedy capers| The starting point for David Baddiel’s new children’s book is a zany ‘what if’ scenario that sets up a very funny story of self-discovery. Malcolm is the only member of his family not to love animals (possibly due to an unpleasant experience with a monkey and its poo on a day out at the zoo), until a meeting with a mystic goat on the year six trip turns him into a series of different creatures, including tortoise, cat and pig. Will the experience change his view of animals? Bonkers as the situation is, much of the comedy derives from Baddiel’s sharp observations of ordinary life - the animals share lots of human characteristics – as well as his skill in setting up and delivering funny lines. Malcolm is a sympathetic character too, and readers will want to know what happens. ~ Andrea Reece

Famous works of art can be found in the illustrations, but the people have been replaced by gorillas. Can you identify the original pictures? Who painted them? Libby makes up lots of unusual acronyms. Can you find out common acronyms for different terms and use them to make an acronym dictionary? Could you make up your own acronyms? The book is aimed at children aged 8-11, M has just turned 8 and I would say that is a good fit. It definitely works better for independent readers which I think a lot of kids in this age group will be.

Malcolm’s family have lots of pets. Create a set of instructions to teach people how to look after a particular pet. These could be written instructions, a radio report or a video tutorial that could be posted online. Chapter five ends with a cliffhanger because Malcolm doesn’t know where his school trip will take him. Can you find cliffhangers in other stories? Can you use these as ideas for cliffhangers in your own stories? Funny, sometimes moving, always engaging Guardian I love this book because it really made me laugh! The best book I've read since I was born! Tom, 11, LoveReading4Kids Possibly the best book I have read.It is such an amazing novel and is really engaging from the beginning to the end.Although the start and part of the end might not be as fun to read, the rest of it couldn't be better. The animals on the farm all speak different languages (‘malanguages). Can you speak any other languages?

Write a persuasive letter to your family to ask them to get you a pet… or to your teacher asking for a class pet. Could you create your own picture which is based on a famous work of art, but where the people are replaced with animals? Executive Publisher, Ann-Janine Murtagh. “David Baddiel has taken the children's book world by storm! He combines his incredible literary talent with audacious and original storytelling for kids which together with his high octane humour have made his books a massive hit with his growing band of young Baddiel fans. His latest novel is a testament to that - a hugely imaginative adventure with a Home Alone meets Animal Farm twist! We are truly delighted to have signed David for three more books which sets us up for brilliant publishing in the years ahead and is destined to make David Baddiel a major children's author brand in the future.”

Teaching Ideas and Resources:

Felt maybe the book was a little long as the middle got a little repetitive, but it soon pepped up the humour and good story. And thus enter the animals, and the transformation. Most of the book take place on the farm, and we see Malcolm make friends, transform in another animal, find out about what happened to him, and also has a jolly good time as he discovers that being an animal can be quite fun and delightful. A whole world opens up to him, and I laughed quite hard that he had to keep repeating the story over and over again, and had to ask for witnesses (the animals he was previous with). I love this book it’d amazing. I especially love when he is different animals. I like all the characters . I would recommend it especially for people who like or love animals At the end of chapter nine, Malcolm discovers that he has transformed into a tortoise. Write your own version of what might happen next. I would like to thank whoever is responsible for the print in the book. The line spacing and font make it much easier to read, without being babyish or condescending. A real plus for any dyslexic or reluctant reader.

Malcolm transforms into different animals throughout the story. Can you make a list of similarities / differences between them all? Which is a problem because his family love them. Their house is full of pets. What the house is NOT full of is stuff Malcolm likes. Such as the laptop he wanted for his birthday. This time no Parent Agencies, no Controllers that will control people/animals, oh no, this time we are experiencing what it is like to be an animal, and not just one, but quite a few of them. The book is also heavily illustrated and I just adored each and every illustration. They made the book really pop and made some of the scenes even more hilarious. He manages to tap into the 'wish fulfilment' genre brilliantly each time, from changing your parents, to having a controller that works on people, and now - turning into another animal! Look at photos of different primates and draw your own pictures of some of them. You could also look at video footage of gorillas and other primates. For example: Secondary Col 3 Anthologies for KS3 to KS5 English White Rose Maths Secure Science for GCSE Reimagine KS3 English KS3 Science Now Collins Classroom Classics K-Pax says ‘To understand animals, you have to live as an animal!’. Write a story about what you would do if you were turned into an animal. Twins Fred and Ellie are being bullied and finding life hard at school - until they receive a special video game controller. This funny fantasy adventure has a sweet little moral about self-belief and standing out from the crowd.
