From elegant chandeliers and pendant lights to minimalist floor lamps and table lamps, you will find a wide range of Over many centuries architects have pondered the possibilities, challenges and boundaries of light. They have pushed artificial lighting to new limits and they have harnessed natural light in previously unimaginable ways. Great architects down the years have grown an understanding that, although light is not built, it can be designed, akin to an ethereal material in its own right. Influenced by the likes of Louis Kahn and Alvar Aalto, this collection highlights some of the biggest contemporary names in architecture, showcasing how they have explored, exploited and expanded the power of light in contemporary projects. As an event photographer at Weldmar Colour Run at Lodmoor Country Park in 2016, I got permission to stand on an elevated stage, well away from the paint. This enabled me to shoot safely from a high angle and capture this joyous moment of a girl throwing powder paint across the heads of the other participants.’ Taken during the Badger Trails Events Dorset Ooser race in August 2021 on a bridleway between Turnerspuddle and Briantspuddle. Despite having run nearly 26 miles, many participants, like Carole Loader pictured here, were more than happy to jump in the puddles for the camera.’

Inspired by the region’s rich architectural traditions and the museum’s unique location at the point where the Arabian sky meets the sands of Saadiyat Island and the waters of the Arabian Gulf, Jean Nouvel wanted the Louvre Abu Dhabi to rain light. But there is something incredibly cosy about finding a quiet spot and enjoying a cup of tea and a good book, don't you think? Balancing this was the ultimate challenge for the artist, who for years had been studying how to capture the ephemeral atmosphere of ever-changing landscapes. The weather, the time of day and the flow of water under the bridge all shaped the industrial landscape he sought to depict. But it was the fog that proved most difficult to tame and that contributed to the unique effet of London. Taken with a Canon 5D Mk III with a 70-200mm f/4 lens at 70mm. Aperture of f/6.3 and a high ISO of 5000, shutter speed of 1/4000 sec to freeze the action and keep people in sharp focus. Their work in healthcare and the impact of lighting for well-being is unparalleled, a fact that is apparent in many of their projects. However, it is in the design of The Greater Accra Regional Hospital at Ridge in Ghana where they harnessed truly life-changing technological advancements.

This appreciation of colour and its kindred relationship to light recurs throughout Mr. Allen’s collection, most notably in a watercolour of Lake Lungern in Switzerland by Joseph Mallord William Turner. There I was, up on Bridport Town Hall roof being trained to manoeuvre around the parapet, (harnessed and clipped-on). A friend from Bridport Camera Club and I were in place for capturing images of the Freedom of the Town celebrations for the First Battalion, The Rifles in March 2014. And there’s the perfect picture of Colmer’s Hill looking down West Street.’ Monet and Turner, drawn to these specific locales and their changing environments, represent a central tenet of this collection: the unique perspective of the artist. As Mr. Allen described: ‘You become sensitive to the fact that places with special light attract painters, and you want to experience that through their eyes.’ Nothing is left hidden, yet everything appears as if in a dream. Parrish chooses a perspective that does not shroud our gaze, nor filter our vision. With over 4000 products, we cover all aspects of commercial and domestic lighting, including down lights, bathroom lighting, spotlights, exterior lighting and much more. In 1900, Claude Monet took a trip to London with his wife and step daughter to visit his son, Michel, who had taken up residence in the capital. Monet spent nearly all his time painting the city. He would return the next three springs, focusing on three motifs: the Houses of Parliament, Charing Cross Bridge, and Waterloo Bridge. I regularly visit Weymouth RSPB Lodmoor reserve especially when the common terns are nesting there. On this occasion it was a very white sky, so there is not much colour in the image. I like the positioning of the birds and the arty look it has created.

Of all the projects in which she and her team were involved, the Heydar Alive Centre in Baku stands out. The lighting, seemingly fused within the very fabric of the building, is a true masterclass in illumination. Started in 2007 and completed in 2012, the project was a huge leap forward for lighting technology, and many of the ideas and systems first used here have become common practice today.Positioned on the edge of a hill against a boundless landscape, the cabinet-like tree contains a small house and, in the notch above, a sphere. Notably, the top cabinet door is slightly ajar, with no hint as to what may be lurking behind. I like to get close to the action and shoot from a low angle to emphasise the movement of the dance sides. In this photo of Lyme Morris in action at the Wessex Folk Festival 2017, I captured this unusual shot with the camera resting on the ground, composed without the viewfinder to get a worm’s-eye view of the dancers.’ The church with a concrete structure comprising high walls with rectangular apertures as the source of natural light.
