In efforts to stop this book review from turning into an essay, I’ll leave it there with a take home message. Honestly such a beautiful book and one I would whole heartedly recommend to all. This generation was always remembered as so ‘stiff upper lip’ and trying always to do the ‘decent’ thing but it made me question, decent for who? Driven to Suicide: Apparently the windows are nailed shut at Heathcote House because some young mothers-to-be become suicidal.Annoying Younger Sibling: Averted with Little Richard, who is a sweet and cheerful kid who tries to cheer his older siblings up when they're unhappy. I haven’t read a Jacqueline Wilson book in a few years and it was lovely to read one targeted at older readers. I found her writing to be just as engaging and well-paced as I did when I was a teenager, which surprised me. But I guess this just means she’s just an astounding writer no matter her audience.

When and why do we suddenly decide what we should and should not read , do , say and dress . Is it peer pressure or do we do this ourselves ? I always loved her books but why did I stop reading them ? Set in the 1960s, this compelling YA novel follows Laura, who finds herself pregnant at the age of 14. Even though I often felt angry at how Laura was treated and the stigma that she faced, this book realistically depicts the attitudes towards unwed and teen mothers during a very different time. My heart ached at how one moment Laura is navigating life, family and friendship as an adoloescent and the next she's whisked off to a home. As well as winning many awards for her books, including the Children’s Book of the Year, Jacqueline is a former Children’s Laureate, and in 2008 she was appointed a Dame. Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Belinda is known for her blond hair and is one of the sweetest people Laura has ever met.

The book looks at quite challenging topics such as consent, abuse and forced adoption yet does so in a way which a younger reader will be able to absorb it without being traumatised. I will always wonder at her ability to understand and translate such tough subjects and emotions into her words so beautifully. Australian, authoritative and totally up-to-date, Baby Love is the only book you'll need to guide you through your baby's first year. The story gripped me and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey Laura went through without having to think too hard. Skipping School: Laura skips her lessons at Heathcote House a few times, though she notes that the teachers tend to turn a blind eye to it if one of the girls and her baby are leaving that day. Embarrassing Damp Sheets: Happens quite often at Heathcote House whenever a girl's water breaks during the night. It happens to Jeannie and Laura worries that Sarah will get her sheets damp when she sits on them after starting labour.
