The novella follows the story of Kelsier from Mistborn: The Final Empire and concludes with the events of the last book in the original trilogy, The Hero of Ages. During the later half of 2014 Brandon was having difficulty getting back into the story for Shadows of Self, he had previously written a third or so of it in 2012 between drafts of A Memory of Light. It seemed an ultimate irony to him that he might have managed to cheat death, only to find himself suffering a fate far worse. While this is the first in a series, it’s an exceedingly satisfying book on its own, and fans of the genre should waste no time picking it up.That tone seemed a direct contrast to the man beside him: a vagabond, a mountain man wearing the Lord Ruler’s face. It also has a great cast of believable characters, a plausible world, an intriguing political system, and despite being the first book of The Final Empire, a very satisfying ending.
