Description

We use the government validated systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) ‘Little Wandle: Letters & Sounds Revised’. The programme is designed to teach children to read from Reception to Year 2, using the skills of decoding and blending sounds together to form words. The Little Wandle programme provides a full progression through all commonly occurring GPCs(sounds), working from simple to more complex, and taking into account the frequency of their occurrence in the most commonly encountered words. Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together. o Children in Reception are taught to read and spell words using Phase 2 and 3 GPCs, and words with adjacent consonants (Phase 4) with fluency and accuracy. We ensure our Preschool pupils are well prepared to begin learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) and blending in Reception.

We provide a balance of child-led and adult-led experiences for all children that meet the curriculum expectations for ‘Communication and language’ and ‘Literacy’. These include: Assessment is used to monitor progress and to identify any child needing additional support as soon as they need it. The best way of learning something is to do it and then teach someone else. These letters and sounds flashcards are designed to make KS1 children speak out loud and challenge their friends to do the same. Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 receive additional Phonics ‘keep up’ sessions either on a 1:1 basis or in a small group. By the time children leave Princes Risborough Primary School we want them to be competent and fluent readers who can recommend books to their peers, have a passion for reading a range of genres including poetry, and participate in discussions about books. At Princes Risborough Primary School, we believe that reading is the key to all learning and so the impact of our reading curriculum goes beyond and is embedded across the entire curriculum for our children.

Level 2 Overview Plan Twinkl Phonics

This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. Alphabet sounds flashcards like these are specifically designed to teach children how to read through the use of phonemes and graphemes instead of memorising the individual letters. This follows the ideas behind the Letters and Sounds program by the Department for Education. We use the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ assessments to identify the gaps in their phonic knowledge and teach to these using the keep-up resources at pace. Children in KS1 will love challenging classmates or making the phonetic noises all together! Think of actions or motions to go with the sounds to make sessions more dynamic.

There are plenty of ways of making the Letters and Sounds program fun. Using alphabet sounds flashcards and turning your teaching into a game can be a great place to start.
