Overall, there are a lot of units available to the Deathwatch, and the ones you choose will have a cascading effect on how your list plays and what other tools you like. Frag Cannons want Land Speeders, while Assault Cannons (on Proteus Kill Teams) will prefer the Hailstrike. How to Score Points with Deathwatch The balance of AP, damage, and number of shots are sufficiently different that it may not necessarily be obvious what the best choice is, so we ran some simulations against squads of Intercessors, Gravis, and Ork troops to get a sense of which option would be the most effective. Since 9th Edition is so heavily dependent on movement and contesting objectives we also examined how the heavy options would fare when the units were forced to move. First up is a comparison of all three types against Intercessors and Gravis units. Deathwatch is a super enjoyable and very flexible army that has options in all phases of the game and a lot of room for player skill expression that makes it very dynamic. Hunters Unleashed: If a unit has made a charge, been charged, or made a heroic intervention, it gets +1 to hit in melee. All units with this tactic can perform a Heroic Intervention. This is a dangerous tactic for 9th edition gameplay – the +1 to hit is nice to have, but the heroic intervention thing means that any unit attempting to flip an objective that Wolves are holding has to assume they’re getting into melee – which is exactly where you don’t want to be against most Space Wolves units. If like us, you thought the basic Crusade rules in the Warhammer 40,000 Core Book were already pretty rad, you’re gonna love all the extra narrative goodness in the new codexes! There are other damage dealing units that have shown up in lists, such as Sternguard Veterans, and Indomitor Kill Teams that are definitely worth considering, but have not shown to have the pedigree of the above. The Gladiator Lancer is the vehicle that has popped up the most, as the most reliable anti armour option available to the faction, and is definitely a unit to consider. As you’ll see in the Munitorum Field Manual MkII, the Thousand Sons are also getting a new HQ choice called an Infernal Master. Sounds ominous, right? We’ll have more on this mysterious new addition to the sons of Magnus nearer to their codex’s release, so keep a third eye out for them on Warhammer Community.

Beacon Angelis is the second go to Enhancement in this role, providing Deep Strike and a 0CP Rapid Ingress to his unit. The power of this cannot be overstated, allowing you to bring units anywhere on the board to score primary, take control of areas and bring devastating damage to bear. Proteus Kill Teams: for 33PPM, we can solve the resilience problem, adding in 4 terminators (3 Assault Cannons/Power Fist and 1 Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield) and a Bike to the squad. Typically keeping the 4 Frag Cannons and 1 Deathwatch Thunder Hammer. This unit loses battle line and a point of OC, and trades in its rerolls for +1 to hit vs units above half strength. This synergises a little better with Oath of Moment, and adds some much needed resilience to the squad, at the expense of a heavy points premium. The bike and its 14” move adds a decent amount of shenanigans to the squad with its ability to push a little further and reduce charges. Like the Storm Speeder, Space Marines use three different variants of the Gladiator. Gladiator LancerThe Storm Speeder Hailstrike is so heavily armed that it can annhilate entire swathes of enemy infantry in fusillades of blistering projectiles. Speeding over the battlefield, its specialised loadout shatters charging infantry formations and shreds barricades and other infantry defences. The new Masters of the Chapter, as per Warhammer Community. After a short controversy these points ended up being the correct ones. Chapter Master Deathwatch Veterans, 4 Frag Cannon, 4 Deathwatch Thunder Hammer, 2 Astartes Shield, Xenophase Blade, Long Vigil Melee Weapon Where the Lancer hunts the largest prey, Reapers stalk the smallest. Armed with twin heavy onslaught gatling cannons for 24 Strength 6 shots, Reapers wipe light infantry off the board and have enough shots to remove heavier models. the secondary and upgrade weapons fit right into the primary mission so add them on as well. Gladiator Valiant The model is nice though, so it will certainly look nice on the shelf until it gets a substantial points drop or some stat changes.
