The setting sounds idyllic, surrounded by peach groves and a lake to swim in, the writing was very atmospheric and I could almost smell the peaches and feel the dry dust in the air when the weather got hotter. I wouldn't describe this book as fast paced, it reads at a more leisurely pace with a real slow burn between the characters. There is nothing negative I can say about this book. From beginning to end, this is a gem. Toon has created a beautiful masterpiece worthy of the highest praise and all the stars. If I had one wish, it would be to experience this as a first read all over again because it is truly magnificent. What I thought: I’m not usually a romance reader, the rare occasion I do read a romance I reserve them for holidays, but I can honestly say I loved this book. Paige Toon is one of those authors who I get genuinely excited about, especially when there is a new book to devour.

Finally, the cover. Am I allowed to say that I find it average too? It wouldn’t attract my attention while searching for books in a bookstore. Usually, I like UK covers more than US ones, but I really hope that the US one will be better than the UK one in this case. And, there is NOTHING that I enjoy more than to see two likable people who have experienced great loss and pain, find each other and come out on the other side.

After seeing each other in a bar, Wren and Anders have their first conversation in a cornfield. It is the first conversation, but it will not be the last. There will be many in fact but with all the talking, there is a very important bit of information that is left out.... Nobody writes angst and joy and hope like Paige Toon.”—CHRISTINA LAUREN, author of LOVE AND OTHER WORDS Thank you to PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own. On the other side of the world, Anders lost his wife four years ago and is still struggling to move on.

Anders is struggling to move on after his wife was in an accident four years ago. He goes home to his family's farm in Indiana and visits more frequently now due to concerns about his brother.

A moving, remarkably romantic and emotional novel written by one of the only writers who can make me cry! Paige Toon continues to weave the most beautiful, deep stories, and Only Love Can Hurt Like This is her at her absolute best' Lia Louis The author is known for writing gutwrenching novels, and hits the mark again with this wonderful tale' The Sun The writing is sentimental and engaging. The characters are layered, supportive, and generous. And the plot is a touching tale of family, friendship, self-discovery, happiness, heartbreak, taking chances, growth, healing, revelations, tender moments, light drama, selflessness, romance, and new beginnings. Overall, I really loved feeling like I was part of the book, that I was meeting with real friends and not characters made to entertain me. The problem was a bit too dramatic for me, but at least the blurb hinted it would be. Guess I’ll be reading more contemporaries in the future because Paige Toon’s pen is not one I want to ignore now that I’ve found it.I also didn’t like any of the side characters. The author made all the characters such shitty people that I’m not sure how we are supposed to feel towards them. I feel like I need to mention the twist, I didn’t see it coming. That took the sadness to another level and makes you understand why the characters are acting a certain way better. The amount of research this author puts into each novel. But especially of recent. This particular one I feel took a different turn within her genre compared to previous novels. For starters, this novel is set between America and the UK. Usually it is Australia. Only Love Can Hurt Like This is a book that is more of an experience than anything else. It’s simple in its plot yet complex in its heartfelt emotions. The character development of Wren and Anders is amazing. The setting is wonderful as well it’s like a British girls idealised version of America, long summer days, handsome strangers, country farms and fire flies at night.
