My favourite part of this novel were the descriptions of the landscape, the ocean, sailing and coastal lifestyle, deftly woven into the story. The writing is evocative and refreshing, bringing to life the story and characters. The tag line, 'Ever felt like a fish out of water?', is a bit deceptive. The only part about being 'out of water' is that she's the new girl at school, and a literal reference to Sam, as the ACTUAL 'fish out of water', but speaking literally, he's actually more than comfortable on land.

I bumped this up to a three because A) it's by an Australian author and the small-town feel was appealing, and B) because I tried to remind myself that if I found it immature, it was supposed to be. I read this in the spirit in which it was intended: for very young adults or children. It was cute enough: girl moves to a rural seaside town and uncovers a secret. The romance felt a little strange - very childish in parts even though the main character is supposed to be in her late teens. It is a great novel by record breaking sailor Jessica Watson who sailed around the world at the age of 16 for 210 days alone! This is a great book referring to everyday life but also adding in that magical fantasy of mer people. Even though mermaids might put older readers off I still recommend you to give it a try. I would aim this book to readers between 9 yrs to 14yrs as there are fantasy elements but this book does have a sense of romance so it is really suitable for many ages. Jessica Watson puts her own twist on this novel as she retells some of her own sailing experience and adds a lot of sailing into the book. Despite a slow start, I really enjoyed this book. I didn't expect it to have a fantasy element which is merpeople, a plot twist. The setting was a little sketched out, but it still gave a realistic feel and something familiar - home. I liked the characters even though I didn't feel that connected to them. The merpeople and history parts were what kept me reading. I also enjoyed the Little Mermaid influence in that a curse would fall on a human in love with a merperson.The publishers provided an advanced readers copy of this book for reviewing purposes.
