Description

Last night I took it upon myself to try a Scottish pub nearby that has quite the selection of Whisky. A huge array. This gem is the Highland Stillhouse in Oregon City, OR. Came for the Whisky, stayed for the company. Clynelish 26 yo 1996/2023 (52%, OB, Prima & Ultima, Pedro Ximenez and oloroso, 889 bottles) - 121023

Taste: Soft, warm and caressing. There is a waft of orange incense smoke that fills the palate, turning it into a decadent boudoir of salty luxury, adorned with sprinkled orange peel, mint and spicy cinnamon. 2.0It’s especially the waxiness that make Clynelish stand apart. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just get your hands on a bottle of Clynelish 14 Years (it’s worth it), and you’ll recognise the flavour profile I’m referencing soon enough. It’s a characteristic that seems to have been much more prevalent in earlier eras, but something you’ll rarely encounter in modern single malts, Clynelish being one of the few exceptions. A lovely malt! Interesting and nice balance/alternation of sweet and dry, with a strong fruitiness and some floral overtones. The fruit flavour seems a little peach-like Clynelish 25 yo 1993/2019 (54.3%, Gordon & MacPhail, Connoisseur’s Choice, refill hogshead, 220 bottles) - 011220 - by Angus - 261019 NOSE: creamy toffee with fresh fruits, a hint o butane gas, salt, honey (sweet clover honey) with some spices and bees' wax. As it sits in the glass, you also get floral hints, big vanilla and citrus. Beautifully cream-coated nose. Clynelish 1995/2011 'Dancing Stag' (46%, Robert Graham, hogshead, cask #8658, 461 bottles) - 290612 On the nose I get mandarin and fruits in general. On the palate it's crisp, quite a bit oak and little bit of peppery fell. Finish is medium lond with nice creamy feel to it. Some time ago a reader pointed out that I hadn’t reviewed Clynelish 14 Year Old. To be honest I was a bit surprised myself: I definitely tried it a couple of times but somehow it never made it onto the blog. Arrival/Development: It's off to a great start. A citrus burst with loads of pepper; no soft cream or vanilla here. Turns salty in a hurry, with hints of smoke and licorice. None of the above is especially overwhelming or dominant, so the combined effect is both unique and pleasing. In most distilleries there is one combined vessel for low wines and feints and foreshots, but Clynelish has a seperate low wines receiver and a forehots and feints tank. The low wines from the was still are pumped into the low wines receiver, and from there into the spirits still via the spirit still charger.Finish: Bitter oak, more vanilla, and a touch of citrus again that seems slightly lemony. The finish is perhaps the weakest link in the Clynelish chain, aside from the astringent mouth feel around the teeth and gums. Still, it's not bad either. I would describe the finish as "ish," or "eh" or "so-so." Clynelish 18 yo 1996/2015 (54.4%, Signatory Vintage, refill sherry butt, cask #6516, 505 bottles) - 190423 Clynelish 33 yo 1973 '2nd bottling' (54.6%, Prestonfield/Signatory Vintage for LMDW, cask #8913, 439 bottles, +/-2007) - 301222
